2022 Review

Happy New Year, like I normally like to do I will start the first two blogs of the year reviewing the churches I visited last year. This year was more of a to revisit many of the churches I could not get into during the lockdowns we had in the previous two years. The problem of access is still with us as I have to organise for the church to be open on some of my visits. I hope you enjoy looking through the churches I visited

I started the year off with one of the last churches I visited in 2021 St Nicholas Forest Hill which is near Oxford. This I found to be a very pleasant little church to go to though I have to admit parking is a bit of a problem nearby

St Andrew West Bradley really was the last church I visited in 2021 and only because I went with my wife to visit her friend in the village. I popped out to the church to let them catch up

All Saints Wytham marked the first church to be visited in 2022 a nice church to go to even though there was frost on the ground and I had to phone the churchwarden up to let me in

In Febuary I showed St Margaret Binsey just outside Oxford. I'm told it is open 24/7 and if you ever needed a church to visit for some peace then this was it.

All Saints Coleshill is on the far west of Oxfordshire near Swindon if anywhere. It is a church well worth looking up if the roads are a little narrow to get there

St James Sotwell was a revisit for me as I had been here before and found the church locked, this time I arranged for it to be open. The church also marked the first of many revisits to churches I would make.

I had been wanting to visit St Mary Thame for a long time and finally managed it where I came across the grave of Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. The blog was published in two parts with the second one starting March

I had written a blog before about St Laurence Warborough but I revisited it  the church so I could comprehensive cover the church

St Andrews Headington was another church I visited many years before which at the time was locked. I arranged to visit the church when it was open this time while my son was having a scan at the nearby JR hostptal. The church was one I was glad I made the effort to visit again

I ended march with a visit to St Nicholas in Abingdon but my hopes to find it open were soon dashed and there was little to see around the outside. I made a note when it was open for a revisit. My Revisit to St Nicholas Abingdon happened sooner that I expected and I managed to show the inside the following week

The second week of April was taken with St Helen Abingdon  a church I had been to before but not inside, this was shown the following week as there was so much to see inside.

I was back outside Oxford the  following week with a visit to St Lawrence North Hinksey this was another revisit though the previous time it was locked.

The month ended with a revisit  to St Lawrence South Hinksey where I finally got to see a rood loft and go in it though I get the feeling it was a restored one not original

In May I went to Berkshire nest door to Oxfordshire for a visit to St James Leckhapstead a Victorian church which I found rather pretty

St Bartholomews Yarnton took up the next posts a very attractive church outside Oxford Part two showed the inside

The moth ended with a visit to St Andrews Sandford on Thames where I arrange to have the church open for my visit

In June I went to St Mary and St Nicholas Littlemore which turned out to be locked but let me have a good look around the churchyard

St Peter in Caversham is beside the River Thames on Oxfordshire and I stopped off by chance on my way back from Reading just on the off chance it would be open. It was and I was glad I stopped to look as before it was always locked

St Peter Cassington came about as I noticed it was not far from the church at Yarnton so I made the effort to visit, well worth it.

Back to Berkshire again the last week of June with a visit to St Mary Thatcham which I had been meaning to visit for a long time. There was a memorial to a Victoria Cross winner there I wanted to see. Turned out to be a nice church to visit as well.

Next week I will show the second part of my review of 2022

Till Next Time have a wonderful weekend

Thank you Bill for the review. A good record of the churches you visited in the last year and at the end of 2021. You have put a lot of effort into your visits. The notes about parking, access appointments are helpful. Also I like the photos showing the changing seasons. All the best to you and your family in 2023.

Thank you, I am glad you appreciate my blogs, if parking is a problem for me then it is the same for others so why not say where it is easy to park for them

It is interesting to see how different they all are when you see them together. I'm glad you were able to revisit some of the ones you hadn't been able to see properly before.

A very belated Happy New Year. You visited some super churches last year and lovely to see the photos. Locked churches are such a pain. OH asked me the other day why I didn't visit more locally and I said because they are always locked even before covid! Most in Herefordshire now seem to be open thank goodness.
