St James Leckhampstead

This week the Church Explorer takes you to Berkshire and St James Church Leckhampstead. I decided to visit the church after noticing it was one on my map that I had not been to. Looking at the church I could see it was relatively new so on looking up the history I found there was very little. The church was built in 1858/60 though there was one built back in 1050 as a chapel way found at Chaple Farm about I Km east of the church.

Looking at St James from across the road

Path taking you to the church and churchyard beyond

Very had to take a view of the south side of the church so I took a panoramic one

From the east

Looking east towards the main churchyard

The churchyard towards the boundary

The last few graves near the boundary fence, note the kite photo bombing me

Looking across to the south you can see the extension where more recent burials take place

I was pleased to see a cast iron marker in very good condition

Headstone

A cross with anchor and chain now with covering of ivy

Another cast marker with remnants of paint on it

The commonwealth War Grave of O.A.Rosier

Who stand among the rest of his family, The grave crosses are all cast iron

The porch and time to go inside

There is a south aisle

Then going over to the main aisle in the nave

Going in towards the chancel

A wall separates the chancel from the nave

The altar and east window

The east window which has some nice stained glass

A verse from the bible is on a long painted plaque, typical of the Victorian era

The wooden pulpit stands on a stone plinth

Which gives a view of the nave and south aisle

You can also get a good view of the chancel and choir stalls

Back in the chancel and a look down the nave

Near the door you can see this framed commemoration

Some of the stained glass you can see in the church

Different items from around the church

There was only one memorial I could see along with more bible verse which was at the back of the church

The font and cover

I will leave you this week with this photo of one of the windows with coloured glass reflecting on the sill.
Till next time have a Peaceful Weekend

  1. What a well-designed church. Rather Arts and Crafty - all those brick patterns inside save it from being austere and make it very interesting and pretty. Some very pretty stained glass too.

  4. Nice! The brick patterns on the interior are almost distracting but I like them on the outside.

  5. Billy - the brick patterns (especially inside) are unique and spectacular. I really like this church! The stained glass is also pretty. But my favorite shot is your last one - with the colored glass reflecting on the sill. Well done! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!
