St Denny Stanford in the Vale Pt2

The second of the tree churches I forgot to show in. After I found St Denny locked during my visit I emailed the churchwarden who kindly told me he would let me know when it would be open again. He did just that and It was the church did not disappoint when I went in.I would suggest you get a coffee before reading on it turned out longer that I expected

Since my last visit Remembrance day poppy wreaths had been laid

Poppies in the window sill as you go in seem to set the scene for this church

Old tomb lids were displayed on the stone seat

With a welcome sign and the precautions against the virus still evident

Walking thorough the north aisle into the centre I looked down the church

Towards the back the tower had been partitioned off

Looking through the chancel arch to the chancel

The altar rails and altar

The altar itself with east window

The altar with its beautiful covering

The east window

Turning around here to look back through the church

The picture does not do the chandelier justice

The light reflected off this corner of the chancel I'll explain the bulge later

This view is from the back of the church

The organ a modern version which looks like it can be moved around

The pulpit

Giving a good view of the nave and north aisle

And a very good one of the chancel as well

The north aisle a view I took when I first walked in

Looking towards the back

The alter looking a lot nicer than many others I have seen

I noticed this in the corner

Two doorway one leading to a rood loft the other the chancel which looked like  a huge squint

Now back to this protrusion It must be part of the spiral stairs leading to the rood loft though I could not get in to see The window just gave light to the stairway

The doorway to the north aisle form the chancel

The east window

Collage of some of the stained glass windows, the top right on is at the back of the north aisle

The one on the left and centre has some of the older glass in it

Some of the panels in the church

one item I always look out for, the rolls of honor

The list looks like though who served and the ones who did not return hand written

One panel shows the lost from WWII

A single one to Major Athelstan Chamberlayne

The Roll from WWI

Around the church you will find  a few more interesting memorials

along with quite a few tombs

That cover a lot of floor space

A beautiful floral display between the north and main aisle

Carved wooden font

a lot of carved head corbels if you look up

Royal coat of arms

Looking over towards the north aisle with a rather nice banner on show

Last view of the nave and north aisle from the back

The vase of flowers on the altar with the cross behind

I will leave you this week with this view of St Denny
Till next time I wish you all a wonderful weekend

  4. What a beautiful church. I was homing in on the remnants of a much earlier church (I presume this was modernised by the Victorians). Little fragments of very early glass too and I don't think I've ever seen a wooden font before.

  8. A rood loft, I’ve learned something new. The last time, and first time, I heard the word rood was in my English literature class a very, very long time ago. I like that this church has indoor tombs and put up war memorials.

  10. Wow, there is certainly a lot to see there! I always think it's very sad when you see wartime memorials with the same surname appearing several times and thinking of the poor parents who lost two or three sons.
