St Andrew Headington

These photos were taken back in 2011 when I was taking photos around Headington one evening and I came across the church of St Andrews Headington, my first impression on seeing the church was that it looked old so I stopped of quickly to take a few photos  some history from Wikipedia you can read more in the link above
"Headington's toponym is derived from the Old English Hedena's dun, meaning "Hedena's hill", when it was the site of a palace or hunting lodge of the Kings of Mercia. In a charter of 1004, Ethelred II of England, "written at the royal ville called Headan dune", gave land in Headington to Frideswide's priory, which included the quarry and the area around it.
Henry I granted a chapel at Headington to the Augustinian  of the Priory of St Frideswide, Oxford when the priory was founded in 1122.[2] The Church of England parish church of Saint Andrew was built in the middle of the 12th century and enlarged in the 13th century. The bell tower was started in the 13th or 14th century and completed in about 1500. St. Andrew's was repaired in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Gothic Revival architect J.C. Buckler restored the building[2] and lengthened the nave in 1862–1864"

The first view off the church looling down the chuchyard path

The churchyard is old and full of tombs and headstones

The tower shows it age and the fact it was built back in the  13th century  and near the to you can see the builders initials

In the chuchyard you can see this I presume peaching cross, the base looks older than the top

Which has a sundial on one side
Another vice of St Andrews with the chuchyard

One moss covered tomb

Think the door has been placed as decoration, right the base of the tower

View up the tower

The water spout which empties over on the right, don't think Id want to be under that if it rained

The porch which was locked, I missed seeing inside as the rector came out only moments before
Last view of St Andrews looking down the path from the road. I would like to return here when I get a chance as I would like to see the inside though parking around here is a problem, could be the bus. If you would like a peek inside then I suggest you have a look at Oxfordshire Churches
Till next time have a peaceful week
