St Michael Cumnor Pt2

 

 This week we return to St Michael Cumnor where we look around the inside of the church. This was one of those churches that I really did not know where to start with my photo's but I did work through it getting as much detail as I could, this was why I did not link it into the blog last week. The amount of detail in the church is outstanding considering it is a village church.  I would suggest you get a coffee and some cake while you look through

 

 

Just a reminder of what St Michael looks like

 

After walking in the door I found to be open in the west end of the church you look down the nave

Here we look into the chancel

Above the altar is the chancel window

Over to the left you notice this elaborate tomb

which rather than an effigy you have  brass , the depiction shows the Forster family

Looking back out of the chancel to the nave

which has an altar with with wood panelling behind

and a rather nice floral display

 

On the south side of the church you find this chantry chapel the two recesses contain a tombs

 

as you walk in on your left is the statue which I thought was Queen Elizabeth II

but turns out is Queen Elizabeth I. I must admit I did think she looked a bit strange for our presents queen, there is a little about in beneath

 

 

You should be able to read what it tells you

 Further in the chapel looking at the tomb recesses 

This is the stained glass window in the chapel

 

 A more modern tomb by the chancel arch

 On the opposite side of the arch is the pulpit with this box for the lecturn

 

 From the pulpit you look across to the nave

One set choir stalls

And and some Poppy heads which are unusual to say the lest

 

This one same in comparison to the others

Could well be a wild boar

There are a number of tombs in the floor, the one above may be a contain a vault underneath

Quite new in comparison to the last one

this one is quite worn from footfalls over it

As you come in the door the fist thing you see is this spiral staircase leading to the bell loft

 

Around the walls commemoration plaques from bell peals, must admit this one is a first for me

One for Queen Elizabeth II, I wonder if there will be a peal run on her next jubilee

 

 

Quite a few memorials along the walls as well

The organ pipes the organ itself is behind the curtains

Roll of honour to the fallen from the village in WWI

You need to look under the organ for the roll from WWII which was built in their honour

Quite a few faces look at you from around the church

And from the roof

Poking his tongue out mind you he could be getting choked

This memorial caught my eye

 Because of the winged skull

 

 

Quite a modern face this one

Memorial to Elizabeth Lady Thackeray  I think her husband was awarded the Victoria Cross

I actually wonder what this is at he top of the door, something to hold it open or closed or clubbing you over the head
