St Nicholas, Grosmont

 

My final church of the day ended with St Nicholas, Grosmont. The rain I had been dodging all day finally arrived and while I was walking around the churchyard light rain was coming down. You will also find there are not many photos of the outside of the church due to the rain

Inside the porch which I might add was large

First look in the church

First impression was it looked very empty and barn like

It did not take long to work out that services were taken behind the screen in front

South aisle, there is a restroom in the corner

I did notice there were light on in this part along with the vicar talking to another lady, I worked around them. The vicar told me some of it's history as well and why the nave was not used now

Normally I would say the east window but the church is the other way round so it the west

The font looks Norman and I wonder how many heads have had water placed on them in it over the years

Memorial to Rebeca who was the wife of George Nicholas, she dies in 1801 he followed 25 years later

I had more or less finished when I got back here but for two things, the vicar turned on the lights and the Heavens opened, the rain could be hear hammering on the roof outside, I went round the nave again in the light

There are more memorials in the church than you can shake a stick at, these are some of the readable ones

All local wealth family's who wanted to be remembered

This memorial is hidden behind a load of stacking chairs

Another behind the effigy of a knight moved to the back of the church, who the fellow was I cannot tell you though some one has stored the Christmas tree base on his feet

 

I thought this Bier  different not having seen the like before though I did take a photo of a similar one at Abbey Dore

The nave in the light, it's used more for communal activities now rather than services but at least it is used
