This week the Church Explorer makes a return visit to St Mary the Virgin Fawley in Buckinghamshire this time I get to go inside which I was unable to do on my visit back in 2019
The Church of England parish church of Saint Mary the Virgin was rebuilt in 1748. It has a Tree of Life stained glass window designed by the artist John Piper (who lived nearby in Fawley Bottom) and Patrick Reyntiens." If you click on the above link it will take you to a more in depth history on Wikipedia
The tower from the churchyard
Moving round the north a bit
West end view, the entrance is through the door infront
War memorial and church
This looks up the churchyard to the Freeman Mausoleum
The inscription on the side
Graves near the second Mausoleum the covered cross looks like it might fall over soon
The Mackenzie Mausoleum
Looking to the war memorial
East over the churchyard
These are baroque headstones though I missed getting a shot of one behind
I did like this headstone, thought it unusual
Looking east
John Piper He only lived a few miles away
Chancel with east window
Window detail
And the altar
Looking up at the barrel ceiling
Back to the entrance
Chancel again now I found the light switch
See the altar and rear panel better
East window not as detailed though
The pulpit
And how the nave looks from it
The west window on the gallery
North transept
Stained glass windows in it
Tree of Life window by John Piper
Memorial getting a bit faded to Reverend Thomas Powys and his wife Elizabeth
More stained glass which is in the North transept
Along with quite a few brass memorials
Never easy to take photos of because they are shiny when they are dull it becomes easier
This large monument is in the transept as well
Jacob Whitelock
It's in Latin which I never learned
He has a very smug look to him
I presume its a hawk or eagle at his feet and a deer at feet of the wife
I think her name is Elizabeth and she is behind him a bit higher up
Nearby is another memorial not easy to read or get to
Another view of the font which looks colorful
The pulpit again
Which has carved heads on the corners
Memorial to Lucy from her sisters
Looking southwest across the church
The Roll of Honour
Collage of the stained glass windows
Memorial to Philip and Elizabeth
The arch at the back or the church has this writing on the pillars
closer view of the writing
Memorial to Karen Lancaster
When I was going I notice the chancel arch now the lights were on
Above it dove which was now lit up
Till next time may I wish you all a peaceful week
