This week the Church Explorer visits Oxford Oritory church of St Aloysius Gonzaga Oxford to give its correct name. No point in cutting an pasting just click on the link for the history. The church is featured in the book Oxfordshires Best Churches and is one of the last churches I need to visit it is also one of the few Catholic churches I see and after looking round I have no doubt I will return again.
The porch with double entry
My first thoughts on seeing inside was that it is stunning
The chancel end
In the apse is this stunning reredos, the photo does not do it justice
Panoramic view of it
The rose window in the organ loft, never looked to see if I could get up there
There are murals over each door way at the back
This one show martyrdom but I did not church who
Nearby somewhere to pray
The pulpit is quiet beautiful to view as well
as you know I am not behind getting a view from they as well
You will see this mural if you walk along it
To the small chapel at the end
Where there is an altar and kneeler
I should have checked who the statue was of
Looking across the altar from near the chapel
The arch opposite the one I am looking from
With a beautiful little rose window
Looking back up the aisle
From the aisle you can see this painting
The south aisle
Which has some truly beautiful chapels
Inside the chapel
On either side cabinets
With religious items on show
Even the ceiling is amazing
Along next door another chapel to Saint Philip Neri
The chapel no less beautiful to look at
The statue is inside the chapel
Further on one of Our Lady of Lourdes
At the end is another chapel which I think is the most beautiful
A statue of Mary with Jesus to one side
It made me stand in awe
Looking up at the ceiling
The Madonna and Child
Top of the altar and east window
The east window though all the words on it are in Latin which I am not good at reading
This window is of St Gertrude
The altar
Apse ceiling
Another view of the chancel and reredos
last view of the church
