St Matthew Llandefalle

St Matthew Llandefalle  is a church I have been looking at visiting for a while but either I did not have a chance or could not fit it in after visiting another church. When I did have a chance the road was closed, this time I had been at our caravan while it was being serviced so after it was done I stopped off on my way back home. photos were taken with my compact zoom and iphone

" St Matthew's Church
, is an active parish church in the village of Llandefalle, Felin-fach, Powys, Wales. Dating from the 15th century, the church was restored, probably by W. D. Caröe, in the early 20th century. St Matthew's is designated by Cadw as a Grade I listed building."

The lychgate is up a narrow lane, parking is a problem

The church and churchyard as you walking up the path from the lychgate

Inside from the doorway

Looking down the nave

Where as you look closer you see a rood screen

Closer look at the rood screen

Inside the chancel

The altar rails split off the altar

Closer view showing the altar and east window

The altar table which is simple panels

Rood screen from the back

Choir stalls with organ beside them, there are another set opposite tese

The pulpit

wide view of the church from the pulpit

Interesting to see a rood stare case

Which are quite steep looking up

They lead to this opening with the window behind

Collage of the carvings on the rood screen

South aisle

The font which I have not doubt dates back to Norman times maybe older

Alter and east window in the south aisle

There is some medieval stained glass inserted into the main panels

Closer view of the medieval stained glass

I noticed the altar cloth covered some fretwork on the altar

Being nosy I pulled back the cloth to reveal this stunning altar

It was some beautiful work

Over in the south aisle is this stoup

Looking to the back of the church

Which had be partitioned off to give this area which used to be used for Sunday school

The window in the screened area

Around the church you can see a lot of old memorials

I will leave you with this view of the rood screen and wonder how it would have looked had the loft still been intact
Till next time may I wish you all a peaceful week

Another lovely church which looks full of light. Great to see the rood staircase and the rood and the altar you uncovered is wonderful.

Looks like a church where you could spend quite a while wandering round and discovering details...
