St Michael & All Angels Lyonshall

Lyonshall is a village that is situated along the A44, you pass by the church which is situated on a hillside. I have long thought about visiting as we drove past on many occasions but until now I could never figure out where to park, as my van was at the dealer having some work done I was given a loan car and found the carpark beside the church so stopped off for some photo's. I can find little history on the church but it does date back to the 11th century, I did find some detail on St Michael & All Angels on Britain Express who come to the rescue so if you world like to read more click on the link

The church looks impressive and the wood framed porch tends to make you want to see more

Look down the nave aisle you see arches either side dividing off the North & South aisles

Across the chancel you find a rood screen

Go in the chancel and you find choir stalls either side with the organ a little further on

you see the font centre

and you get a good view form it

I spotted this headless effigy by a wall and wondered as to its history

Here we look down the North aisle

and along the South

At the back on either side are memorials which you can see on the wall

Above the arches on either side are more memorials to various people and families though reading them comes a little hard at that distance

On one side of the entrance in the South aisle you find the Roll of Honour which is about the only thing that is lit up and rightly so

A wonderful display of lilies is on show as you walk in and this horses head with a crow on poppies on it

in the door that takes you to the base of the bell tower is this stained glass panel depicting St George

Outside in the churchyard you find it a very large space. The photo on the right was taken as I came into the churchyard from where I parked up












Look north and it seems to go on forever



















Most of the churchyard is well kept
with a good selection of monuments











The lower part of the churchyard is more over grown and given back to nature

There are a few family vaults like this fenced one which have had new inscriptions added to to them by the family as the old ones were eroding

You could spend a good time looking around all the monuments and Tombs chests here

Like the ones here on the East end of the church.

Ivy also grows wild in parts

and nature looks after these graves in the lower part of the Churchyard
