A Lost Church

I found this churchyard while looking of an Ordnance Survey map of Wales. It was near a place I had visited before and I wondered how I missed it the first time. The Map says Church (remains Of) and what you will find is the churchyard of Llanfthangel Abergwesyn

The paint is pealing off the old sign here

The gates to the churchyard which I might ass looks well kept

there are quite a few tombs and headstones round the place looking towards where the church used to be

This would have been the church at one time, though there is little to show now what was once here

Almost lost in a yew tree is this Celtic cross

Which with time has now a covering of moss

  The odd headstone stands nearby

though this could pass as a memorial you would see on the wall in the church

There are tombs around which are getting a layer of moss

Under a yew tree are these wall memorials from in the church

still in good condition recording the person to be remembered
Not far away stands this wonderful  tall cylinder memorial over a grave

another headstone under a yew tree

which seems to shade half the churchyard

The churchyard does still seem to be in use as there are many new graves there with fresh flowers on

It is still a place to spend a few moments in peace if you ware going past and take in the view from the churchyard.
Have a peaceful Sunday

  1. Fascinating! I like the sense of history and the moss. You need to come back here on a foggy day or even better during a full moon... you could get some great photos!

  2. Nice post. We had two long abandoned churches near my house in Somerset - such places do retain a certain atmosphere.
